World Health Organization Faces Significant Staff Reduction Following US Financial Withdrawal
This international health organization has announced intentions to cut its staff by almost a quarter – amounting to more than 2,000 positions – before the middle of 2026.
Funding Crisis Triggers Major Restructuring
The move follows after the United States, formerly the organization's largest donor, pulled out funding previously this period.
Washington was responsible for approximately eighteen percent of the organization's total funding, creating a significant budgetary gap.
Expected Workforce Cuts
According to internal projections, the workforce is expected to drop from 9,401 posts in early 2025 to approximately 7,030 by mid-2026.
The decrease of two thousand three hundred and seventy-one positions includes job cuts, retirements, and regular departures.
"This year was one of the most difficult in WHO's existence, as we have navigated a challenging but necessary journey of prioritization and restructuring," stated the organization's director-general.
Financial Gap Remains
This Switzerland-headquartered organization now confronts a funding gap of $1.06bn for the 2026-2027 period, amounting to nearly a fourth of its total budget.
The amount marks an reduction from a prior projected shortfall of 1.7 billion dollars reported in May.
Not Included Finances
The budget projections do not include a further 1.1 billion dollars in expected funding from ongoing discussions with multiple donors.
The representative for the agency noted that the present unfunded part of the biennial budget is actually lower than in previous periods, crediting this to several factors:
- A smaller overall budget
- The launch of a fresh fundraising campaign
- Higher in participating countries' mandatory fees
The realignment initiative is currently approaching its end, allowing the organization to progress with a renewed structure.
