Former NFL Player Antonio Brown Files Not Guilty Response in Murder Attempt Trial
One-time NFL star Antonio Brown is traveling to Miami to face an attempted murder accusation stemming from a shooting that occurred in May, with his counsel submitting a not guilty declaration on his behalf.
Jail logs in Essex, New Jersey, indicate that Brown was released on Tuesday morning for his relocation to Florida. Brown, one of the most popular athletes in the National Football League, had waived transfer to Florida from New Jersey, where he was detained after being apprehended in Dubai.
Brown’s lawyer, Mark Eiglarsh, said in an email that he has previously submitted a formal innocent declaration to the murder attempt allegation. Brown could be in a Miami hearing as early as Wednesday early for a bail session, Eiglarsh stated.
Based on his arrest document, Brown is charged of grabbing a pistol from a safety staffer after a celebrity match bout in May and shooting two shots at a person he had clashed with earlier. The claimed victim, Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu, told investigators that a bullet grazed his throat.
Eiglarsh said that Brown was only protecting himself from Nantambu.
“The actions he was obliged to take were purely in defense against the claimed individual’s violent actions. Brown was attacked that night and responded within his legal privilege to protect himself,” Eiglarsh stated.
Brown was not immediately arrested because originally authorities did not recognize Nantambu as a victim. It only afterward in May that Nantambu delivered a full account about the incident to officers and named Brown as the shooter, the report states.
Based on his social media content, Brown had been staying in Dubai for a number of weeks. In a update after the incident, Brown said he was defending himself because he was “attacked by several people who attempted to rob my possessions and inflict physical injury to me.”
A category two murder attempt allegation in Florida bears a maximum 15-year jail penalty and up to a $10,000 fine in the case of a finding.
Brown has dealt with multiple judicial issues over the time. He previously had been accused of physical attack of a truck driver, several abuse accusations, failure to pay child support and further occurrences.
In a recent match with the Buccaneers against the New York Jets, Brown took off his shirt, equipment and handwear and left the field, resulting in his release by the franchise and practically ending his football career.
Brown, who completed a dozen years in the NFL, was an elite player who spent the majority of his career with the Steelers. During his career, Brown had 928 catches for above 12,291 distance, the 28th highest of all time. He was a 7-time all-star selection.
