{'I could have killed them' - Lawson experiences near miss with F1 track officials
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson revealed he narrowly avoided a life-threatening collision during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two marshals crossed the track immediately ahead of his car
The concerning event happened on the third lap when track officials were seen on the racing surface as Lawson was rejoining the race following an premature pit stop to replace his compromised front wing
Competitor's Live Reaction
Moments later, the Formula 1 racer Lawson radioed to his race engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you just see that? I could have... killed them"
"I genuinely couldn't process what I was seeing"
"I exited on a new set of hards, and then I arrived at Turn One and unexpectedly appeared two dudes running across the track"
"I almost collided with one of them, truthfully, it was incredibly risky"
Security Issues Highlighted
"Evidently there's been a miscommunication somewhere but I've never experienced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We can't understand how on a ongoing race track marshals can be allowed to just dash across the track in such a way. I don't understand the reason, I'm sure we'll get some form of reasoning, but it really can't happen again"
Governing Body Reviewing
The sport's regulatory authority, the global motorsport federation, is thoroughly reviewing the circumstances
"Subsequent to a first corner event, the race directors was advised that wreckage remained on the track at the turning point of that curve" stated the governing body
"On lap three, track officials were notified and made ready to enter the track and remove the wreckage once every vehicle had gone by"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had entered the pits, the instructions to dispatch marshals were canceled and a safety warning flag was shown in that zone"
"Our inquiry continues what happened after that point"
