Nobel Prize in Chemistry Recognizes 3 Experts for Pioneering Research on Framework Materials
The prestigious award in Chemistry goes to Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson, and Omar M Yaghi for their foundational contributions on MOFs.
Their studies has potential to solve numerous major planetary challenges, such as trapping greenhouse gases to address climate change or curbing synthetic debris through sophisticated scientific methods.
“I'm deeply honoured and delighted, thank you very much,” remarked Professor Kitagawa via a call with the news conference after receiving the news.
“How much time must I spend here? I need to leave for a scheduled meeting,” he continued.
These three recipients are splitting prize money totaling 11 mln SEK (about £872k).
Framework Construction on a Heart of their Achievement
Their scientists' work focuses on how molecules are built in unison into complex structures. The selection panel termed it “molecular design”.
These professors formulated techniques to build structures with large voids between the molecules, permitting various substances to pass within them.
These materials are called metal-organic materials.
This announcement was delivered by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences at a news conference in Stockholm, Sweden.
Prof. Kitagawa works at the University of Kyoto in Japan, Richard Robson is associated with the University of Melbourne in Australia, and Omar Yaghi resides at the UC in the US.
Previous Award Recipients in Scientific Categories
Last year, Demis Hassabis, John Jumper, and David Baker won the honor for their research on proteins, which are essential elements of biological systems.
It is the 3rd science award presented recently. Previously, three physicists earned the Nobel Prize in Physics for their contributions on quantum mechanics that facilitated the advancement of the quantum computing system.
On Monday, 3 scientists investigations on how the immune system combats harmful microbes won them the award for physiology.
A single laureate, Fred Ramsdell, did not receive the notification for a full day because he was on an off-grid outing.
